Suubi or not Suubi? That is the question

In 2015, the Canby Christian Church team joined hands in a large circle with members of Kacungwa Community Church and village leaders praying over the land and location that would become the Suubi Medical Center.  The church structure that was on the land served as a beachhead for Jesus to do the work that was ahead.  The unity of His people from around the world asked His blessing on the future work to be done through the clinic.  It was a powerful, significant and symbolic moment in time.

Over the next year, the clinic was constructed to the plans agreed to by all stakeholders.  The grand opening ceremony was planned and took place when our team from 2016 was in Kacungwa and a free clinic was held for the public.  As usually happens, the team of doctors, nurses and volunteers treated about 300 people per day.

The new clinic now stands as a shining light of hope on the hill and is the most beautiful building around.  From the main road going through the trading center, you can clearly see the clinic building.

Just before leaving Uganda, I had the opportunity to spend some time with Dr. Martin.  Of course our conversation turned to the Suubi Medical Center.  First off, he said that Suubi is the best performing clinic in the Renewal Healthcare Network.  He said that the financial performance is better than he had anticipated and is seeing a large number of patients from all around the area as he had hoped.

Then he told me "the rest of the story".

Apparently there has been a significant spiritual battle over the clinic.  He described the "night dancers" (also called wizards) who would dance outside the windows of the clinic gathering the forces of evil against the "Christian" clinic.  Inside, a prayer warrior was doing battle on her knees and God prevailed and the night dancers were driven away.

Next, there are a number of unlicensed medical practitioners in the area.  These are not witch doctors, but rather individuals who may be able to read a little in medical books and will treat people for a small fee.  They have no medical training and are not approved to practice medicine.  Think of it like somebody opening a clinic here and their only training was the ability to search WebMD and prescribe medicines.  At any rate, someone from among this group cut the throat of a goat and threw the body on the clinic grounds.  There was then a charge made to the village leaders that the clinic was sacrificing animals.

Again, prayer and fasting within the clinic.  Finally a village meeting was held.  Village leaders called all witnesses to testify.  In the end, one of the perpetrators confessed all that they had done against the clinic and as a result, the standing of Suubi Medical Center within the village is stable and continues to offer hope and treatment to all people who will come.

At the core of the mission is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, share the message of Hope in Jesus and love the people served.

What Dr. Martin shared was that it was the fasting, prayer and determination of the clinic worker that God blessed in this battle.  He wasn't aware of any of this until after it had been resolved and as he told me the story, he just smiled at how God had worked all things together for good at this clinic in Kacungwa.  While we rested having seen the clinic was built and commissioned, the battle on the ground was just starting.  That, is the rest of the story!

Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.    2 Chronicles 20:15 NKJV
